What is teething?

Most babies start teething around 6 months of age, but it is possible for them to start as early as 4 months and as late as 12 months and in some circumstances some babies can be born with their first teeth. Common symptoms of teething include:

  • The gum is sore and red where the tooth is entering through
  • Flushing (redness) on one cheek
  • Your child is rubbing their ear
  • Dribbling more than issue
  • Gnawing and chewing on things, such as toys, fingers or other objects around them l
  • Distress or fretting

Teething Remedies

Teething can be uncomfortable for your child and distressing for you, but there are steps you can take to help your baby cope with teething symptoms.

  • Teething toys - there are many different types of teething toys, so experiment to find the one that is best for your child
  • Cold - pop a teething toy in the fridge or, depending on your child’s age, use chilled fruit to soothe their gums
  • Teething gel - use teething gels like Bonjela Teething Gel to numb your child’s gums and provide relief from teething pain

How can Bonjela Teething Gel relieve symptoms of teething?

Bonjela Teething Gel contains two active ingredients:

  • Lidocaine Hydrochloride
  • Cetalkonium chloride

Lidocaine Hydrochloride is a medicine known as a local anaesthetic, which can numb and area affected by pain. Cetylpyridinium chloride is an antiseptic which is commonly used to fight bacteria and infections in the mouth. These two active ingredients work together to soothe your child’s gums whilst preventing infection as your child’s teeth enter through the gum. The fast-acting formula provides lasting relief by forming a protective film which soothes and calms gums.

Teething is one of the great milestones of your baby’s development and memories of your baby's first big toothy grin will be treasured forever. Some babies sail through the process and are showing off their first teeth before you know it, but for others it can be a more uncomfortable time, causing distress to both you and your baby.

It’s impossible to tell how your baby will react until that first tooth begins to cut, but we hope that the information and advice provided on this website will help to reassure you and ease you both through the teething process. Within this website you’ll find information on everything from spotting the first signs that your little one is actually teething, to helping them deal with the discomfort to ideas for nutritious meals they can chomp on with their new found teeth!

Bonjela Teething Gel and Bonjela Mouth Ulcer Gel provide fast-acting, soothing relief from the pain and discomfort of teething, mouth ulcers and sores, and dentures.

What is teething?

In most babies, teething starts at around six months old, when their first teeth start to push through their gums, although it can be earlier or later than this age.

What are the main causes?

The main cause of teething pain is the pressure of the tooth pushing through the gums. It is thought that babies’ cheeks and jaws can ache as they feel the teeth moving in their gums. As their teeth grow and then rest, your baby may feel pain on and off for several weeks before a tooth actually appears.

What are the symptoms?

Your baby’s gum may be sore and red where the tooth is coming through, or one of their cheeks may be flushed. They may dribble, gnaw and chew more, or be generally irritable. They may also rub at their cheek or ear and have a slightly raised temperature.

What are my treatment options?

Aspirin should not be given to children under the age of 16.

To help relieve teething pain, you can gently rub your baby’s gum with a clean finger or allow them to bite onto a clean, cool object, such as a chilled (not frozen) teething ring, or cold, wet flannel. Giving them a cool sugar-free drink such as water may help, or try to distract them by playing with or comforting them. If your baby is over two months old (or three months old for particular products), you can rub sugar-free teething gel on their gums, which contains mild local anaesthetic to numb any pain, and antiseptic to help fight infection. Make sure you use a teething gel specifically designed for young children and not a general adult oral pain relief gel which is not indicated for use with children. If your baby has a raised temperature or is in pain, you may want to give them a children’s sugar-free painkiller such as ibuprofen or a children’s paracetamol suspension. If you are unsure you should always get advice from a healthcare professional.

What can I do about it?

Bonjela Teething Gel - sugar-free, clear, almost colourless banana-flavoured gel for the relief of pain and discomfort associated with infant teething.

(Medicine for  children over the age of 2 months – not intended for adult use)

Top Tips

  1. One of the signs that your baby is teething is that they start to chew on their fingers, toys or any other object they can get hold of.

  2. If your baby is over two months old (or three months old for some products – see pack for details), you can rub sugar-free teething gel on their gums to provide relief from discomfort and help fight infection

  3. In addition to teething gel, you can use teething rings for your baby to safely chew on, or a cold, wet flannel.

  4. You can also give healthy things for your baby to chew, such as raw fruit and vegetable (e.g. pieces of apple and carrot) – but always stay close in case they choke.

  5. If your baby has a raised temperature or is in pain, you may want to give them a children’s sugar-free painkiller such as ibuprofen or a children’s paracetamol suspension. Check the pack to make sure the product is suitable for your child's age group.

Always read the label.
