Orlistat is a generic brand of medicine used to treat obesity; this is where you have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or over. Orlistat can also be prescribed when your BMI is 28 or over and there are other risk factors present, such as diabetes or high blood pressure, that make weight loss favourable.

Orlistat is the active ingredient that helps to aid weight loss by preventing up to one-third of dietary fat from being absorbed by the body. Helping you to lose up to 5% of your body weight in the first 3 months.

How does Orlistat work?

Orlistat works by blocking the enzymes in your gut that digest fat. Nearly a third of the fat that you eat is blocked by orlistat and the undigested fat is not absorbed into your body and is instead passed out with your stools.

For best results, Orlistat should be taken alongside a low-fat diet and exercise. If you eat a meal that does not contain any dietary fat you do not need to take your dose of Orlistat as it will not have any effect.
